In March 2022, the City was awarded a Clean California Local Grant in the amount of $5 million to beautify the entrance at the Second Street-Interstate 8 interchange including Oakdale Avenue, the alleyway east of Second Street, and Walter Way. This project is consistent with the City Council’s goals regarding beautification of entryways into the City.
The Clean California Local Grant program has the following goals:
• Reduce the Amount of Trash Waste and Debris
• Beautify and Improve Public Spaces
• Improve Public Spaces for Walking and Recreation
• Advance Equity for Underserved Communities
The Oakdale Alameda Street Beautification is a multi-benefit project that will provide a positive impact through the creation of native landscape and tree canopy, installation of efficient irrigation systems, a green alley conversion, installation of waste and recycling receptacles, installation of storm drain waste filters, construction of thematic sidewalks and crosswalks, and installation of decorative pedestrian scale street lighting. Together these improvements will reduce carbon and greenhouse gases, reduce the urban heat island effect, improve the public space for accessibility, foster safe pedestrian connections to critical goods and services, reduce waste and debris, and improve storm water quality.
