History of the Valley of Opportunity

The History of El Cajon - The Valley of Opportunity

By ElDonna Lay

Published in 1987 by ElDonna Lay, The History of El Cajon - The Valley of Opportunity, details the history of the El Cajon Valley starting with the geologic history of the region, continuing with the cultures of the Native American peoples who called it home and moving into Spanish and Mexican eras of the 1800s, and finally exploring the first 75 years of the City of El Cajon—from 1912 through 1987. Complete with stories and photographs of early prominent families, as well as images that show the evolution of a valley so familiar to many, Lay offers an in-depth and chronological glimpse into the shaping of El Cajon and how it came to be known as the Valley of Opportunity.

1957 Annual Report

The 1957 City of El Cajon Annual Report

The years following World War II marked unprecedented growth in the United States and El Cajon was certainly no exception. In just the seven years from 1950 to 1957, the City's population grew by nearly 500%—from 5,600 to 27,776 residents! This annual report from 1957 details the growth that happened up to that year, including the growth of the industrial park which stimulated the construction of new housing subdivisions and schools, and ultimately drove the population explosion. The report outlines City services at the time, the state of the City's budget, it provides an outlook for the years ahead, and includes photographs from throughout the City.
