The El Cajon City Council had the unique opportunity to recognize El Cajon native Jimmie Johnson in a celebration with nearly 5,000 fans on June 17, 2014 in the heart of Downtown El Cajon.  Jimmie was praised not only his racing accomplishments, but for philanthropic contributions through his Jimmie Johnson Foundation to the community for one of NASCAR’s biggest stars.  

El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, the City Council, Senator Joel Anderson, and other local dignitaries honored Johnson during a special ceremony at Centennial Plaza near City hall.  Among the presentations, a special street sign was unveiled acknowledging Jimmie as not only a Sprint Cup Champion but El Cajon as his home town.  He was also given a custom designed Taylor Guitar, with his signature #48 logo.  Mayor Bill Wells also proclaimed it Jimmie Johnson day in the City of El Cajon, followed by Senator Joel Anderson obtaining a resolution to declare June 17 as Jimmie Johnson Day in the State of California.

In 2013, he won his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, adding to a NASCAR record five championships in a row (2006-2010).  At just 38, he is the youngest driver to win six titles.
