The City of El Cajon has embarked on a major redevelopment process for a key area of El Cajon and East County. The City recently implemented the Transit District Specific Plan (TDSP), a comprehensive land use program created in accordance with existing environmental conditions that provides framework for future development of a 259-acre district. This includes the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and Johnson Avenue, which is the center of the proposed project.
To learn more about the TDSP please visit the City's TDSP webpage.
Following approval of the TDSP, the City received a $2.5M grant through SANDAG’s Smart Growth Incentive Program (SGIP) to begin implementation of strategies listed within the TDSP. In addition, the City also received $250,000 of Proposition 68 funds through the San Diego River Conservancy.
The El Cajon Boulevard Roundabout and Streetscape project is the first phase of proposed improvements that will revitalize the Transit District by providing a direct link to transit by installing elements that encourage smart growth such as wide sidewalks, enhanced crosswalks, thematic lighting, storm water treatment systems, street trees, site furniture, a traffic roundabout, bulb-outs, signage and bike lanes. The improvements include portions of El Cajon Boulevard, Johnson Avenue and Palm Avenue.
