Warm weather brings out recreational vehicles (RVs) and campers as families take road trips and camp around the country. So that the outdoors can remain clean for all to enjoy, RV owners and users must exercise caution to prevent pollution in these areas.

Wastewater and solid waste materials may be un-intentionally dumped along city streets or within parking lots, which will eventually find its way into our storm drains, which leads to the ocean. RV and trailers must use a designated dump station where sewage can be safely discharged into the sewer system.

Residents who have a dump station or proper equipment to connect to a sewer cleanout at their homes are allowed to empty their grey and black water tanks into the sewer. Once the RV’s wastewater has been dumped, it must be disconnected from the sewer cleanout.  Extended periods of connection time are prohibited.

Here are some tips for safely maintaining RVs while also protecting the environment:

  • Routinely check and maintain RV fluids (such as motor oil, antifreeze and brake fluid),
  • Check vehicle for leaks to help control spills (tighten any loose hoses and caps),
  • Check water and wastewater reservoirs for any signs of leakage, and
  • Discharge wastewater and solid-waste materials at a public sewer discharge point or wastewater treatment plant.

If you own an RV, be sure to use an appropriate dumping facility to discharge wastes. Visit https://rvshare.com to locate a facility near you (A fee may be associated with the use of the RV dump site.  Please contact the business ahead of time to confirm if there are any fees).

Storm Water waterdrop logoRemember, it is illegal to dump wastewater onto surface streets or into the storm water system. Each of us must do our part to help keep our waterways, creeks, and beaches clean. The City of El Cajon is determined to keep pollutants out of the storm drains and creeks.  Failure to discharge wastewater properly may result in civil and criminal penalties.

For additional information, or to report a storm water violation, please call the El Cajon Storm Water Protection Program at (619) 441-1653 or visit our website at https://www.elcajon.gov/stormwater.
