The El Cajon Police Department Communications division is committed to educating the children of El Cajon about 911. Each year our Dispatchers and Communications Operators complete educational presentations to all of the second graders in the Cajon Valley school district.

These presentations educate the children about how to dial 911, when to dial 911 and the information needed to assist in getting emergency assistance as soon as possible. It consists of a 20 minute video called, “The Great 911 Adventure” with the 911 for kids mascot Red E. Fox, a 10 minute scenario game, and then a chance for the students to ask questions they may have. The students also receive handouts and stickers at the end of the program.

Each year at least one child is selected to be a 911 Hero. This recognition includes a special awards assembly that is created to honor the child at their school in front of their fellow students, teachers, and family.

The El Cajon Police Department also participates in the 9-1-1 for Kids Hero’s program. This program recognizes heroic children who called 911 to save a life, property or to report a crime.

On the morning of Oct. 16, 2008, this young child facilitated a 9-1-1 call that saved his mom who was slipping into a diabetic coma. The 5 year old boy, who is an El Cajon resident, was honored for his heroic action.

9-1-1 is the number to call when you have an emergency! An emergency is when something happens and you need Police, Fireman, and an Ambulance. You should only call 9-1-1 in a real Emergency, never call 9-1-1 as a joke.

Pick up the phone and listen for a dial tone. Push the “9″ button, push the “1″ button, and push the “1″ button again.

Wait for the 9-1-1 dispatcher to answer the phone.

1. Remember to stay calm and speak clearly.
2. Tell the 911 dispatcher your name, phone number, and address.
3. Tell the 911 dispatcher what the emergency is.
4. Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you to hang up.
