The El Cajon Police Department’s Crime Laboratory provides forensic services for the City of El Cajon. Some of these services include crime scene processing and latent print development. The Crime Scene Unit typically responds to Crimes against People cases and fatal traffic collision cases.
The El Cajon Police Department’s Crime Laboratory is accredited by the A2LA. The Laboratory has met high standards in quality and continues to meet those standards.
Forensic Laboratory Latent Print Internship Program:
This internship program is designed to enhance a student's educational and career development while directly benefitting the functions of the Crime Lab. An internship is a non-paid position and will require a minimum number of hours of work per week. The primary job duties include, but are not limited to, data entry, filing and Latent Print Development. Interns will undergo training in the many procedures for development of latent prints on various surfaces and be competency tested. They will also be trained in writing reports related to the processing of evidence items for latent prints. The interns will have an opportunity to attend crime scenes to observe the processing and documenting of crime scenes by laboratory personnel. Interested candidates must have completed a 2-year degree in a criminal justice program with semester courses in fingerprints and forensic photography; or, be within two semesters of graduation.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
- Be least 21 years of age
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or have legal resident status
- Must possess a valid CA Driver’s License
- Must be of good moral character (conviction of a felony is disqualifying)
- Be physically and emotionally able to perform the duties of the position
- Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph exam
- Ability to volunteer at least 16 hours per week [Lab hours - Monday - Fridays (7am-5pm)] are mandatory.
