Checks issued by the City of El Cajon become stale-dated and non-negotiable after 180 days.  

A listing of the stale-dated checks is updated monthly and posted to give the payee the greatest opportunity to claim the stale-dated check.  

To claim a stale-dated check payable to you, print the Request for Replacement Check, complete, and submit as instructed on the form.  After the claim is verified, a replacement check will be issued within 4-6 weeks.

Unclaimed monies are escheated to the City in accordance with the California Government Code, Sections 50050-50057, which generally requires the City to hold the monies for three years and place a notice in a newspaper of general circulation prior to the escheatment.
