A Home Occupation is a limited business lawfully conducted within a residential dwelling by the inhabitant(s) of that dwelling, and which business is clearly incidental and secondary to the home being used as a dwelling. Furthermore the business shall not change the residential character of the dwelling.

Home Occupations are regulated by Section 17.225.050 of the El Cajon Zoning Code. Any violations of that section could result in the revocation of this Home Occupation License by the Director of Community Development.

NO product sales will be conducted at the residence

NO customers/clients will come to the residence

NO employees, other than permanent residents, may come to the home

NO signs or advertising will be displayed at the residence or on the property

NO storage of property or equipment, other than that typically found in/outside the residence

NO installation of equipment or fixtures, not typically found in a residence

Required Parking has NOT been converted to preclude parking (i.e. converted garage)

NO alteration of the residential character of the dwelling or property

NO nuisances (such as noise, dust, odor, vibrations, fumes, smoke, electrical interference, etc.)

ANY equipment required for the home occupation shall be kept in a pickup truck or van with a maximum capacity of one (1) ton, or a trailer that can be towed by a truck or van

A valid business license SHALL be obtained and renewed each year

A home business conducted by a disabled person or person for therapy and not deemed detrimental, may be permitted, provided the applicant’s claim is supported by a written statement by a licensed medical doctor

A cottage food operation may be permitted to allow for the production and off-site sale of cottage food products subject to obtaining and maintaining required permits from the County Department of Environmental Health
